23 Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life.
24 Avoid all perverse talk;
stay away from corrupt speech.
25 Look straight ahead,
and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
26 Mark out a straight path for your feet;
stay on the safe path.
27 Don’t get sidetracked;
keep your feet from following evil.
Proverbs 4:23-27 (NLT)
Your arteries are blood vessels that carry blood rich in oxygen throughout your body. They go all over your body – to your brain and even to the tips of your toes. Healthy arteries have smooth inner walls and blood flows through them easily. Clogged arteries do not.
Clogged arteries result from a buildup of plaque (dangerous substances) on the inner walls of the arteries. Plaques begin in artery walls and grow over years. Plaque in your arteries can reduce blood flow or, in some instances, block it altogether. When that happens, you just may have a heart attack, or maybe stroke, or even worse, you may die.
That is standard medical truth but it also applies to your spiritual life.
There are different types of plaque in medicine as there are different kind of plaques in the world today. Plaques in the world here refer to greed, malice, hatred, envy, lust etc. It all begins with taking in bad, habouring it and then it begins to grow. Slowly but definitely – blocking your ability to live right.
Jerimiah 17:9-10 (KJV) says:
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Truth is, the heart is deceitful by nature and because you’re so easily influenced by the world around you, you need to take care of your heart. This is what God even expects of you.
Your heart is the center of your being. Instead of feeding yourself with unhealthy things (worldly things) that will eventually clog your arteries, feed yourself with healthy things (biblical spiritual things) that will never clog them.
Just as the body can’t function well without a healthy heart, neither can you with a spiritual heart— you will be sluggish in all you do, hard at hearing God’s word, and slow to recognize His presence.
How clogged is your heart?
Your only discipline is: Bible study, meditation, prayer and fellowship which will keep your spiritual heart pumping strong towards your eternal destination.
Have a blessed week!
